Meet our CEO
Upswing was founded in 2013 by our current CEO and co-founder Melvin Hines. Melvin grew up in South Georgia, attending a high school with limited resources, funding, or access. He was 1 out of only 68 to graduate out of a class of 250. He then went to the University of Georgia and found that he was underprepared for college and behind his classmates. He graduated from UGA despite the odds and founded Upswing based on the belief that where you’re from shouldn’t dictate your success in life. Every student should have access to the same support resources regardless of who they are, where they come from, or where they live.
11 years and counting
Upswing recently celebrated it’s 11th birthday! In the past 11 years, we have helped hundreds of thousands of students receive access to online support through tutoring, advising, assignment review, mental health, and Ana. We can’t wait for the next 11 years as we continue to grow and expand our mission to help more students.

Education is under-resourced, under-staffed, and under-funded. Yet we’ve dared to fly. We take risks and seek opportunities because we believe that innovation is critical for paving the pathway forward for everyone.

We celebrate those who have endured hardships, and despite their lack of opportunity, to continue to fight. This is why we focus on non-traditional students. It’s why we question assumptions about what attributes make a team great.
